You start a statin on this patient, and her liver enzymes
(AST and ALT) rise to 2 times the normal limit. You
recheck them in 2 weeks but they remain elevated.
The proper response at this point is to:
A) Stop the statin because of the elevated liver
enzymes.
B) Start a different statin since this is not a œclass
effect.
C) Do nothing. These elevated liver enzymes are not
a problem.
D) Add cholestyramine to help ease the burden on
the liver.
E) Consider a liver biopsy to rule out other causes of
elevated liver enzymes.
