fellowship after J1 visa - cliffhanger

Hi,

Is is possible for to do a fellowshiop after residency (IM) with J1 visa?

Yes, you can do a fellowship on J1. But, if you do residency on J1 then you need to be able to join fellowship immediately on completion of residency or the 2 year home residency requirements will come into effect/ you will have to get waiver job for 3 years. Also, if you get fellowship, the total duration of residency+fellowship cannot extend more than 7 years.

The J1 visa can only be used for training. So if you complete your residency and do not have any other training program to continue in, then you either have to go back to your home country for 2 years or find a waiver job in medically underserved area for 3 years to be able to convert from J1 visa to any other work visa.

So if you go back to your home country for 2 years, you can reapply to the US after that for an H1?

for H1 you can do a fellowship without taking waiver or going back to home country
