How helpful is it for getting into the residency if you don't need a visa these days..?

If you are a citizen and have 75 on step1 w 5 attempts you're SOL. If you're a citizen or GC holder with descent grades your OK. if your a citizen w 99s than welcome to residency.
Citizenship and visa in my opinion just weeds out people with the same grades. There are some programs that will not even grant you interview if you have visa issues. If you need visa and are trying to scramble your uphill battle just got steeper. At the end of the day just cause you have a visa doesn't mean you can slack off on the steps.

don't forget YOG in the discussion... if u r a recent grad, then no probs...but the clock is ticking so work hard..... if you are an old grad >5 yrs...then GC/citizenship does not help that much....contacts maybe
