portal hypertension - happydoctor
#1
to relieve portal hypertension, FA (2011, pg313)says connecting the portal vein to the systemic circulation by inserting TIPS(between portal vein and hepatic vein). In a sense yes, it relieved hypertension, but would that also increase the chance of hyperamonia? consider all the amonia bypass the liver and get to the systemic circulation directly?
FA 2010 says in a different way, which makes more sense...

Yes, hepatic encephalopathy post TIPS is a major complication, but TIPS is still used to relieve pressure in portal circulation when medical treatment for reducing bleeding risk from esophageal varices fails.

thanks. why wouldn't still use the way in FA 2010, which relieve the pressure through renal vein?
