Cell spends most of the time in the G1 phase. "The G1 phase of the cell cycle is characterized by diverse biosynthetic activities. The synthesis of enzymes and regulatory proteins necessary for DNA synthesis occurs during this phase. Variation in the duration of the G1 phase of the cell cycle, ranging from less than 8 hours to longer than 100 hours, accounts for the different generation times exhibited by different types of cells".(Berek, Jonathan.
