h1 visa transfer-any advice welcome..thanks! - zuhair

I am currently working as a research assistant at a university on h1 visa.
If I get a residency at another university which does not sponsor H1 visa, then can i hire a lawyer to process my application petition?
Can my visa be transferred? or a new petition has to be filed?
Any recommendations? or comments? or advice...please

1) H1 to H1: If host does not sponsor H1 then you cannot transfer
2) If the host does not sponsor H1 then it is not possible to file a new petition.
3) J1 is possible (if host agrees) unless you have filed for permanent residency with your existing H1.
4) Also bear in mind that the total time on H1 is 6 years. You can extend that but you should have to file for permanent residency with more than 1 year remaining on your H1.
