important cardio concept! - thecalccobra

Ok so handgrip increases afterload by increasing TPR. but can someone explain why murmur intensity *increases* for aortic regurg mitral regurg and VSD during hand grip??

Here is what Wikipedia says: Since increasing afterload will prevent blood from flowing in a normal forward path, it will increase any murmurs that are due to backwards flowing blood. This includes Aortic Regurgitation (AR), Mitral Regurgitation (MR), Ventricular Septal Defects (VSD), Mitral Valve Prolapse (MVP) (murmur increases in intensity).

Murmurs that are due to forward flowing of blood such as Aortic Stenosis, Mitral Stenosis, and Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy decrease in intensity.
