Peds Future? Salary? - mit1
#1
How much does the avg paediatrician make as a beginner right out of residency? Is it smarter to do a fellowship?

Or maybe...is it smarter to do a Fam residency and then pursue a fellowship in adolescent medicine?

I'd appreciate any input...

Thanks.

Money should not be your motivation to go into residency or fellowship. If that is you main goal I suggest you to go to buisnes school

Depends on what you like! Family med vs pediatrics is the big choice here..do you want to only work for kids? Salary wise..it's not that different between Pediatrics and fam, I don't think. Regarding fellowship..again, it comes down to your interests..specialists do make more money after fellowship..but do you want to work with one group of patients for the rest of your career..or see the general population?

Money is not my main factor...i'm just a little confused now so i'm making a lit of some pros and cons...

I've wanted to do peds as my first choice...and i applied to family as a back up...but after having some fam ivy's....i'm a little unsure...

I think it really comes down to wether you want to work with ONLY children for the rest of your career

@mit1. Pediatricians make similar salaries to other primary care specialities. Couple of my seniors in 3rd year already have pretty good offers and you can do so if you are willing to make adjustments on location.
Your choice of fellowship should depend on interest. With picu / cardiology you will will see a wide patient group and ages and have the mental stimulation/challenge in your work. You do not necessarily make a lot of money as a specialist and so really your interest/passion should be what drives you as step3md alluded to.

Thank you leu and noropeds...

I do only want to work with children...or adolescents..

I'm actually not sure if i want to do general peds or a fellowship....do you think its better to rank a program higher if they offer in house fellowships???

Not necessary as you should be able to get into most peds sub-specialties (cards is probably the most challenging). Go for the best quality program that you can if there are no geographic restrictions.
