tips for a personal statement - jobel
#1
As we approach match season I found this tip on Match a resident and I thought it might be useful for us!

September 15th marks the beginning of the ERAS© residency application submission season. Each year, since our establishment in 2004, we found that many residency applicants submit substandard personal statements. A well-written personal statement allows your application to stand out, while poorly constructed ones will hurt your chances. Is your personal statement ready?
Note the following tips are to help guide you when constructing your statement:
1.Avoid pointing out negatives or shortcomings in your personal statement.
2.Concentrate on yourself and your accomplishments, and not only on a specific role model.
3.Keep it one page length (600-800 words).
4.Focus, focus, and focus on the specialty.
5.Highlight your strengths and goals.
6.Impress program admission committees with a strong opening and have them remember you with a polished conclusion.

Questions to Consider:

•Is your writing concise and clear with no grammatical errors?
•Does the personal statement relate to a specified professional audience?
•Did you market your capabilities and interests in the personal statement?
•Does your work leave a potential interviewer with exceptional questions?
•Did you check thoroughly your work for plagiarism?
