Components of informed consent
1. Before patients can give consent to be treated by a doctor, they must be
informed of and understand the health implications of their diagnosis.
2. Patients must also be informed of the health risks and benefits of
treatment and the alternatives to treatment.
3. Patients must know the likely outcome if they do not consent to the
treatment.
4. They also must be informed that they can withdraw consent for treatment
at any time before the procedure (even on the way to the operating
room after preanesthetic medication has been administered).
