has anyone gone through paid externships?what is the experience ?

I'm doing 2 externship in primary care. You do everything a "glorified" PA does.
If you want to get "paid" I suggest you find a doctor that needs help and ask if you can help while getting paid.
It helps if you have competency to operate alone without too much oversight.

Personally I find OB-GYNs need the most help.

It was a stroke of luck. I went through my local area and just asked via phone, email, and on site visit to doctors clinic just asking if they needed help.

Hope you have at least an MA Cert......... if not you can get int trouble for practicing medicine without a license.

Its a real problem a friend was arrested and was cleared later for the same thing, he never matched after this
