How do we choose for Preop Antibiotics in CCS? - integrin
#1

I have confusion choosing which antibiotic to give as prophylaxis.
Cefoxitin
Cefazolin
Ceftriazone+ metro
Ampi+sulbac
Vanco etc.
UW has different choice every case.
Please give me advise. I don't have clinical experience

It depends on the infection and the organism causing it.

For prophylaxis?

This is why you do cultures and treat certain cases with empiric antibiotics until sensitivity comes back.

It depends on the type of procedure. If it's low risk or high risk.
Don't confuse prophylaxis with empiric treatment. In prophylaxis you're preventing an infection whereas in empiric treatment you want to treat the ill patient with an atomic bomb until the cultures come back with the microorganism.

So, what I can remember is if it's a GI procedure, we have give something that will cover Anaerobes right?
So is it ok to give 3rd gen Cephalosporin+Metro always in GI surgery?
What if it's Gynecological procedure or for other organs? Can we generalize it by organ system. I just wanna know if it's ok to just memorize the one that we will use it as there are many options and UW used different ones every time which makes me confused.
