Norwalk,
let me take the first set of your Qs and leave the rest to either BB or djyoti
Flooding as you rightly said is one of the treatment options of phobia.. The other option is desensitization technique. First flooding.. This is used to treat specific phobia. The patient is meant to come face to face with that object of his irrational fear. It can be said to be a confrontational technique. For example the patient is afraid of spiders. If you are aware of the TV program ..THE FEAR FACTOR, you will understand this.. The patient under this mode of therapy is thrown in a room full of spiders. The Pt's level of anxiety rises and then falls. This an excellent mode of phobic therapy. Another example.. the pt is afraid of elevator. The pt is placed in the elevator with the therapeutist. The level of anxiety rises and falls. With this the specific phobia can be cured. Desensitization is less confrontational than flooding. The pt is gradually being introduced to that object of his irrational fear until the patient ceases to have fears. If the pt is afraid of spiders, he is shown a drawn spider, meant to touch a plastic spider, then a dead spider is introduced and then will be meant to confornt a living spider and so on.

The treatment of PTSD .. SSRI's and cognotive behavioral therapy. Alibism

thanks alibism.....it was great explaination................but then doesnt it like..........desensitisation is better than flooding ....as if somebody has so much fear of something (say spider)...and if you make him to face that at its extreem (as you told room full of spider)....can be more dangerous rather you go step by step as in desensitisation ?

Both of them work well. The choice depends on the patient and the therapeutist. Flooding is supposed to be more radical and it gives a better result. None of them is dangerous. Alibism
