Dear all, asking this as I'm not accustomed to the local practice. It's nearing the end of my externship, and I truly enjoyed my experience with my preceptor, who's an amazing and selfless consulting physician. I was thinking of giving him a small gift to express my gratitude, but came across several forums that mentioned that it's not appreciated in the States as the preceptor may feel pressured/ bribed into giving you a good LOR.
What is your say? I was thinking of a Starbucks gift card, since my preceptor survives on coffee. Is it too over the top?

Hold the gift card.
Your preceptor will not feel bribed (not with a starbucks card, no offense) but it will feel inappropriate.
Send a handwritten thank you note and give your preceptor an update email when you match mentioning how thankful you are for the help during the rotation. That will be enough.
