I am a U.S. born citizen who went to school in the carribean and did my 2 years of rottaioins in the U.S. I have 6 attempts at step 1 (passed with 76) and 4 attempts at Step 2 (passed with 83).
I have just signed a contract with the FP program of my choice!! I was persistent for the last year as I wouldn't go away and constantly showed enthusiasm. I wrote letters, I appealed to faculty members and residents - and finally everything paid off.
Do not lose hope! Be persistent. Realize your weaknesses and find ways to get around them by constantly showing enthusiasm despite hurdles ans pitfalls. Do not listen when others tell you that you can't do something. Your passion and drive should be so strong and in the end you will be a more hard working, successful physican b/c of all you had to endure.
It may not happen now or even next year but if you stay focused, your hard work will pay off. Most importantly, never underestimate the power of connections or the people you meet during your struggle. When your time comes, that may be all it takes for an institution or program to see your virtues and why you are going to be a better intern than some great test taker with no compassionate qualities or personality.
Take care and GO FLORIDA GATORS in the NCAA march madness basketball tournament!
