You don't need the Step 3 results by Match Day, but it is a must in order to get the H-1B prior to the residency start. My question/comment to you is..are you sure you can switch from J-1 to H-1B? I sincerely doubt it. J-1 is a kiss of death.

I am on J-1 too, just started my 4th year residency in psych. If it is possible to change the status from J-1 to H-1. Please let us know. I have never heard about it. Thanks.

As far as I know you can't convert your J-1 to H-1 at this moment but when you finish your residency on J-1 if you work in health professional shortage area then your J-1 is converted to H-1 eventually to green card. So it's your residency years+three years work in HPSA on H-1 (step3 required at that time) then to green card. Problem is you are already in J-! visa, now if you even pass step3 you have go out of USA and apply for H-1 visa after 2 years. They may also refuse the visa as they did for my friend. If you were on any other kind of visa even tourist visa you could have converted it to H-1 through job.

If you are on J1 for a research ( not clinical training, ONLY research), sometimes on your visa it will be mentioned specifically that 2 -year home rule doesnt apply.. so check on your visa sticker.. if it says DOESNT APPLY. you are in luck. if not there is no way you can change the J1 to any visa, unless you get waiver ship... how do oyu get waiver ship? one way is.. if you are employer is government agency and writes to USCIS that your services are required for united states.
