Language development, vision/hearing function - joesmith1285
#1
In pediatrics case, how do I ask about the language development, vision, and hearing function?
The patient is very little and never complains about those problems, right?

How do I ask about ''nausea''?
Mother never know whether her kid is naseated, right?

isee you do not have kids Smile

Be familiar with the milestones
For example
Can your kid call you saying ma ma , da da, give me?
---
Decrease in vision from slightly to severe
- watch t v close
- do coloring book very close
- have problems finding objects
- bump into objects

Hearing ( it is just a brainstorm, please apply to appropiated ages)
- come when you call
- listen tv a high volumes
- react when phone ring
- react when he heard familial voices coming close
- speak very loudly
- do not speak at all
-frequency or respiratory infections and ear infection
- familiar history for deafness

Nausea
- mom can notice when the kid is gaggin
- when sore throat or coughing kids gag after cough
- notice if nausea is associated with cough or rhinorrea....or.....other respiratory st, or instead with gastro intestinal sintoms...
-Less common notice if nause is associated with neurologic simptosm....mom should know that the kid can or can not keep balance ( fall a lot)

The ideal is to know what is expected for each age. If you don't remember (you probably don't have kids yet Smile ), ask the mother when was the last time the child went to the pediatrician, and what he told about her development, if he said everything is normal. Congratulate the mother for doing a good job taking the kid to the doctor to check her. Congratulate for having called you because of the fever/diarrhea/enureses/whatever!
Ask about vomiting, and if the child looks nauseated before vomiting, or has sudden, projectile vomit. As you know, it may indicate increased intracranial pressure. The child may show signs of nausea while being fed as well.
Good luck!
