give iv cefotaxime for treatment , dont wait for the resilt of culture
give iv albumin to prevent HRS

After treatment SBP...do you put him on antibiotic to prevent relapse of SBP?

yeah ciprofloxacin 250 mg qid in chirrotic pt

Good..kaplan too says so but I was confuse..Kaplan says levofloxacin for a year

If enterococcus infection is suspected, ampicillin is added Recommended duration of antibiotic is 5“10 days or until the ascites fluid PMN count decreases to < 250 cells IV albumin, on day 1 and day 3, is also given to reduce the development of renal failure and mortality Surgery Liver transplant is the most effective treatment for spontaneous bacterial peritonitis Follow-Up Repeat paracentesis at 5 days after start of antibiotic therapy if there is persistent fever, pain, or clinical deterioration Complications Renal failure develops in up to 40% of patients and is a major cause of death |
