Two American Black individuals come to you for genetic counseling and are concerned about their risks of having children with Sickle Cell disease. They know that the risk of being a carrier in that population is one in ten. Which ONE of the following most closely approximates their risk for having a child with Sickle Cell disease?
A) 0
B) 1 in 4
C) 1 in 100
D) 1 in 400
E) 1 in 2500

2pq=1/10
probablity dad will be a carrier=1/10
probablty dad will pass the disease causing gene along=1/2
probablity mom will be a carrier=1/10
probablity mom will pass the disease causing gene along=1/2
all of the above events are nonindependent hence multiply all= 1/10*1/2*1/10*1/2
which equals =1/400

Probability of both parents being sickle cell trait is 0.1* 0.1 - 0.01
probability of child having SS disease ( Recessive disorder) , is 25% when two heterozygotes mate.
Hence combined probability is 0.01 * 0.25 = 0.0025 or 1 in 400.

1 in 400 . D
1/10 x 1/10 x 1/4 = 1/400
