Nope, prolong the car buying situation as long as you can, it sucks to pay car insurance and parking in the city , insane expensive

@step3md: great advice ... future NYC residents, you can also ask current residents (your future colleagues) for tips. They will give you ideas too.

I would have wanted to buy a car in NY cause the public transportation is great.
2 years in NY city where I did most of my rotations, I did just fine without one.
However for Residency, OBGYN timings are crazy, so unless I had accomodation near the hospital, I would have had no option but to get a car. So, depends how taxing your work schedule is you may or may not require one.

Regarding housing, check out craigslist, zillow, and the local newspaper. All are free to you (Except maybe 50 cents for the paper).
