I was wondering, which type of visa is good for fellowship

J1 better

J1 if you want to do a standard 3 year fellowship (assuming IM) and something after like interventional cardiology, interventional pulmonology or you want to go for chief resident. H restricts you to 6 years and an extension is a pain to get.

H1 is better after fellowship since you don't have to do a waiver after you're done and you can apply for a green card right away for cap exempt places.

No difference for 2 year fellowships or standard 3 years without intention of doing something else after.
