i read in another thread that even after submitting your application you can still make correction if it has not been transmitted to programs. Is it true?

You can not change anything on CAF except your contact info. You can change ps and LOR.

while eras clearly states that after submission no changes can be effected. so is there any trick there

For ps and LOR, before programs download them, you can create a new one, then assign the program to the new document. You can not change the old document.
