Palindromes -

questionman

sisi is right..pallindrome is the double stranded dna strand which has the same sequence when you read from 5' to 3'..
something additional..pallindromes are recognised by restriction enzymes and they actually break these sequences to make sticky ends which are then used to make recombinant dnas in genetics.
example of pallindrome is what sisi has mensioned..good work guys..good concepts.

here is an example of pallindrome
5' A A G C T T 3'......strand # 1
3' T T C G A A 5' .....strand # 2
here is an example of non pallindrome

5' A T T C G T 3'......strand # 3
3' T A A G C A 5'......strand # 4
you see,when you are reading the first sequence pair..when you read 5' to 3' at the top strand A A G C T T..now read strand # 2 from right to left 5' to 3'..it is A A G C T T ... look both are the same...so this is a pallindrome
now read strand #3..5 prime to 3 prime, left to right..
A T T C G T...now read strand # 4right to left that is 5' to 3'....T A A G C A ...SEE both are not the same base sequences..thus it is not a pallindrome.
for a pallindrome you must have 12345 =12345 but read 5' to 3' which is the way to read a sequence right to left or left to right..
I hope it works for youSmile
