one cannot choose where and when the patient deserves one...it has to be there in your tone, your words and definitely right time, yes when patient tells you about how much he is suffering in terms of pain , discomfort,one has to be expressive as if you are not patient feels that you have disregarded the degree, this is a real life scenario...it takes you a long way..letting the patient know that he was heard....u are using right words for showing empathy but there are many other occasions and ways too9can learn from me)....
paraphrasing
the value of paraphrasing is when the complaint has been described in many words and you need clarification , definitely NOT when it is simple and clear and by paraphrasing you are boring him/her with same sentences and not to mention wasting time.....summary is great but only the highlight to let the SP know why are you thinking of those diagnoses and why would you be running those tests,so both have their own significance, you just need to know what to use when.....
