Atelectasis is an internal collapse of ALVEOLI. (smaller scale)

Pneumothorax is a collapse of the LUNG TISSUE. (bigger scale)

on X-Ray, Pneumothorax appears as dark and empty on one side with density at the
bottom of the chest field (where the collapsed lung is sitting)...of course Pneumothorax
can happen in different lobes and with atypical findings...but that is generally the view.

Atalectasis usually presents with variable x-ray findings. It is sometimes patchy due
to effusion following the collapse of the alveoli and causing increased pressure in the
vessels of the lung.

dunno if that answers the question, but it might help.

cheers
