do we know the function of Nef gene yet?

Is it upregulatory or downregulatory.

In 2001 notes it says down but the guy says there is debate; just wondered if it had been decided yet

In my notes,it is given that,Nef-initially thought to downregulate HIV production,now thought to enhance the pathogenicity of HIV.
And don`t worry,usmle is not going to test such things,when there is debate.
