there are a few states that dont require you to be in training
http://www.fsmb.org/usmle_requirementschart.html check the second column it lists some states where no postgraduate training is required before you can sit for step 3, through these states you can apply for to sit step 3, they give you the permit and then you can find any location in the states that is convenient for you to sit the exam at, look for a prometric center there, then use your permit to book for the 2 days you want your exam to be done on. (Licensure is a different matter, a temporary license is given if a residency program takes you in to be trained. once done with the training you sit their boards exam (provided you complete step 3 first as some likes to take it during their residency training time). If you pass their boards exam, then you become board certified and be given license to practice medicine. Continuing beyond this is the fellowship if you want to take)

sorry umer104 a bit off topic
[immigration wise: the residency program if they take you in for training will advocate for your J1 or H1B visa provided, so there goes the applications, first to the residency programs, if match, then to immigration, if get visa then wait for the beginning of residency, which is around June, July of every first year residents]

still off topic
[so if not match then apply again next year coz the match is done every year and so are the intakes every june/july, only need to go to immigration if match and a need for J1 or H1B. There is also the off cycle i.e. they take in an individual not around june/july say december or any other time to fill in a place of a resident that has dropped out or they have funds for more places etc, they take in individuals by whatever process they get use to get their new residents or by using the residenswap.com or findaresident.com websites where those who subscribe to it will be informed of the vacant position to apply] |
