for all the usmle exams, one takes it at a specific date. now with this date, 7 years is counted forward in time. if one is not ecfmg certified by 7 years, the step that had gone past the 7 years period needs be repeated.

to be ecfmg certified, one has to pass usmle step 1, step 2ck, step 2cs. passing this three exams means one gets a certificate, ecfmg certified. having this certificate in place means one do not have to repeat any step of usmle step 1, step 2ck and step 2cs
