nice fixed schedule no oncall cover...u go in for 12 h shift and thats that....no need to follow up etc....also schedules get much better as u progress and there is ample opp to njoy life and work as u choose to later on...some people prefer the clean cut approach...patch up stsablize and then out or refer.....nice known work place...not alot of scut as the ER nurses run a good ship....fast thinking on ur feet with out having to deal with alot of the chronic stuff...oh and the other thing is GEORGE CLOONEY.

I know one student who is interested in ER or surgery. He said he likes taking actions, not liking thinking, reasoning, balancing. That's his personality. He does not want to wait one month for treatment results and follow up. That is robably one reason. Many Americans want quick results. Election is 2, 4, 6 years, coporate report profits every quarter. You can prove you are a good doctor by saving lives in the ER more than any other specialty.

"And with due respects to our American friends, I believe most Americans want an easy life with loads of money (everybody wants the same actually !!), so EM by no means fits this description, yet AMGs want it madly"
I have lived long enough here to comment on the statement you mentioned. I disagree with you, Americans are well known for their passion of charity and good doings. Income and lifestyle is in no doubt important to them as well just like other people, but their ambitions and their fondness for adventures is no less important. Hundreds if not thousands of American Drs travel annually to Africa, Asia and South America and other underserved places for the purpose of charity and benevolence. It is the nature of Professional people in this country to seek challenges and competition. I believe the reason why they prefer ER is close if not the same reason why want to work in ER. Finally I agree with some of you that Tv shows might have played a role in boosting student's interest in ER.
Good Luck in ER Match.

terminator2007, I will beg to differ with you slightly on one point. A good many americans do charity work, not because the love it and truly wanna help, they do it to as means to an end, to keep their taxes, low! Disagree with you and definitely you will be telling yourself and others and untruth. Pliz always look at both sides of the coin before givin your two cents.
I genuinely applaud the few who these charity work from the bottom of their hearts.

There are several reasons why Americans have become interested in ER. I am a AMG and have several friends in ER residency. Most of the reasons why ER has become popular have already been mentioned, but I will sum it up
1. It is shiftwork. You show up for your job at a certain time, do your work, and then leave at a certain time. You always know exactly how many hours you are working and when you will be off work everyday.
2. You don't have to worry about running an office, hiring staff, etc. Some ER groups may have to do their own billing, it's not as stressful as running an office.
3. When you go home, you are done with work. You don't have to worry about being on call, having patients calling you, having the hospital page you, etc.
4. You work minimal hours compared to most other fields of medicine.
5. Your are reasonably well compensated considering how relatively few hours you do work.
6. Many people like patient contact, but don't like continuity of care.
7. Many people like having to make decisions quickly, and like the acuity of the issues you may see in ER.
8. Many people like to do the procedures that are done in the ER.
