Salmonella typhimurium is the most common cause of enterocolitis (formerly known as gastroenteritis) in the United States. S. enteritidis and many other of the
1500 to 2000 serotypes have also been implicated in the disease. It is estimated that approximately two million episodes of enterocolitis are caused by these
organisms each year. Many salmonellae, but not shigellae, produce H2S in media containing an inorganic sulfur source (e.g., triple sugar iron agar). The symptoms and the course of the disease described in the case history are typical for enterocolitis, but not for
enteric fever, which is caused by Salmonella typhi.

Campylobacter infections are not rare. Several studies indicate that, in the United States, diarrheal disease due to campylobacters is more common than that due to Salmonella and Shigella combined.
