OU is a great program
My bro did IM residency here and did fellowship in OHIO state in Hem Onc and is now working at Univ WV in BMT as faculty. Most of his friends who went to OU are now in attending positions after very good fellowships all over US.
As far as for city, it is a typical southern state, cost of living is good, housing is waaaaaaaaaaaay cheaper than on east or west coast...nice place to raise kids but if you are looking for partying and night life other than downtown its not like NY or other big cities. Personally as someone who has lived here for 10 years now, unless you are willing to merge with people and try to accept them as them without any judgement and strong opinions you will be okay. It is a southern state, on surface its very welcoming but like any southern state it is very different than open culturally diverse east coast or west coast so you have to be ready to make an effort and be really good at what you do to be liked at a real level. If you dont care about real admirations and friendships it still is a courteous state, people will welcome you and be nice to you. If you do your job right and be in any state in US with the mind set of accepting Americans for who they are rather than who they should be according to your personal morals or values you will do fine.
In my experience people who cant let go of their own opinions about how things should be and judge people based on what they are or are not doing never really fit in b/c they always feel out of place. That doesnt mean you forget who you are but you accept that you are in a different culture and country and treat these people with respect without any reservations and judgments...if you will do that you will make good friends and have respect among people around you
Bottom line, it is a nice place to live if you dont mind a slow pace life and some resistance to foreigners here and there
