dude, its not like prelim is a "back-up". why do you even want to say about applying for cat unless it is the same program? just say with a straight face that this year you have focused solely on prelim surgery so that you have a sure shot next yr to enter cat neurosurg. lying is about speaking the truth diplomatically. that is the name of the game in interviews. hehehe
