low score in step 1......i got prematched this yr - sunmax83

people who dont get 99 are looked down upon by 99ers..i saw that happening at some ivs..and people with 99 brag about their scores. one of the PD literally told that keep your scores with you, I want a smart allrounder.

point is: someone who doesnt get 99 is no less intelligent (exceptions are there) and someone with 99 is not always intelligent (exceptions are there). These exams are like mugging up things and vomiting on the day of exam in time limits. As said by tm020, some people have problems on day before exam or on exam day. some are doing resaerch, mph, or jobs..not everyone is sitting at home getting food served by moms and giving exam at the best..

This person who has showed that even low scorer if does MPH, research, gets USCE etc..can make a very good profile. One of my seniors had scores in 70s, had second attempt in CS but he did MPH and had excellent publications and got matched in University program where many of us dont even get ivs.

Everyone here does hard work, there should not be anything like why that person with low score has more ivs than me, even when my scores are 99s. Because that person has worked hard or even harder. Doing MPH, research, USCE, cooking food, living in tight financial situation for 2 years, worrying about bank loans, and giving steps, is not a child's play.

So my point is, someone who doesnt get a 99, no need to be depressed even if your peers have got 99s. You can make your profile stronger. Not everyone needs to do MPH, if someone can get research and USCE with contacts or by luck. But it is a definite PLUS..

Hey Guys, I am old IMG (1995 graduate). I am studying for the steps but always asking myself if I am doing the right thing. I never take any step yet, but because of financial/family issues, I did a Registered Nurse Program and I have been working as a Psychiatric Nurse for the past 4 years. Does that count for USCE? Will that be a plus in Getting residency since I am very old graduate. I dont even know yet how I will do in exams , studying step 1 now. I got a little bit of encouragement by reading these posts... But I have a lot of hesitations but just think I could take my chance. Please advise me anybody. I will appreciate it... GL to everyone

i dont know if it counts as USCE, although you have direct pt contact, but you dont manage the patients. However, it definitely counts and will weigh on your application. study for steps, you should do good. YOG will come into play only in some programs. You were not idle all these years so should not be a problem.

Agreed with nostringsattached above..

High scores are must,, but that does not mean people with high scores will match (exeptions are there).. low scorers don't have to disappoint..there are lot of things they can do to build up their appication and can match at an awesome place..

Your OVERALL application matters.. And we are seeing this trend coming up in recent years ..

Thank you guys for all your post.

It is important to have some USCE here in states. And it matters a lot but dont forget that even clinical experience from your home country also looks good on your application. I did one year observership under family practitioner but also mentioned my six months of medical officer experience in my application.
During interviews PD will ask you to summaries your clinical experience and it helps and makes difference if you have done something here in states.
