Passed NBME's but failed STEP 1!!!! - sexydoc
#11
sexydoc,

i almost made dat kind of mistake though i havent written my exam yet but what i will strongly sugggest is you find a STEADY study partner with daily meetings to treat everything all oover again.am sure this can be done within 4 months........dis is d approach am currently using and to be honest with you,it has helped both me and my partners and made us more serious and faster and also made d whole thing more interesting and challenging.d mere fact that u have written d exam before makes u better in a lot of ways than pple that havent.brace up and start cuz......"it is not falling to the ground dat is d problem but failling to get up when u fall, and d bitter truth is falling only makes us better cuz we learn how to get up".wishing u d very best

Maybe your concepts are fine but you had some issue on the test day. Just try to recall if you were too anxious or nervous during the test. May be that would help. Good luck

Try and relax okay?Write out all the weak areas that were indicated on your score report. Then pick up your kaplan notes again, start afresh.Study them as though you have never studied them before.then start your questions again with the goal of grabbing concepts especially in your weak areas.i know it is a very difficult time for you,but it will pass.
The thing now is you have to divert the anger and frustration you feel into the energy yu need to start again okay? You just have to get it together and move on.
All the best!

we exist because the big companies fail in providing their students with a one hundred percent no bs no nonsense guarantee if their student fails. pure and simple. we thus fill this major gap in the market by providing a high quality experience that our students have never even come close to previously experiencing

-how did we create this program
we spent ten years developing materials that would best work for our students- especially imgs- that are otherwise very bright but just need guidance and study tips.more details will be provided below but our main approach involves walking the student through big picture usmle overview-specific study skills development including fundamental repeater type questions, clinical correlations, algorithmic flow charts, and real and active students driven usmle question creation applications.

the approach is very similar to how the typical medical student learns in a real clinical setting with his or her patients. thus it involves thirty five percent of time devoted to theoretical issues thirty five percent of the time towards application of the skills in a real case based manner twenty percent in then modifying their approach with a final ten percent in practice practice and practice. thus we are not
a course in the conventional sense but instead very literally a USMLE TRAINING PROGRAM

provided essential English language skills screening criteria are met no student is turned away regardless of past usmle history.our successful students—every accepted student has succeeded with us- have either come to us past histories of scores as low as 145 or with five to eight prior usmle attempts.

-when do they apply to our program
they come to us as early as first year of medical school to as late as fifteen years post graduation. many have had no recent training since that ten years past graduation date.as stated previously many have failed numerous times using the big name companies

-where they are from
they are from all over the usa carribean and the five other continents.

-why did they come to us
as stated above the other big names failed them.they need a guarantee that they will pass. we provide that legal and monetarily based guarantee

-how they did find us
most have been referred by other students whereas others have seen our ads. it matters little how they get there but instead what they do to ascertain that they get there. in this case they have made the correct decision by coming to us.

ABOUT OUR PROGRAM –FOR MORE INFORMATION SEE APPENDIX DETAILS ABOUT OUR TRAINING PROGRAM WITH A SAMPLE TIMETABLE

-overarching guiding principle using big and small picture scenarios
start with the big picture as to what the actual usmle is about. what does the usmle from the student. why do they expect this. now we then work through various small picture methods to lead the student logically not only through a set of notes but actually to a level of expertise in attempting the real usmle questions.

we thus achieve an ingenious decimation of that asphyxiating mold of 19th century rote memory learning
- we have essentially logically and naturally carved out a permanent niche in education that based upon past client testimonials stretches the known limits of the field. we do so by breaking every known standard educational institutional mold. One that ordinarily chokes and stymies the normal actively creative and ingenious human learning process.

ABOUT YOU

-overarching guiding principle
you must take control of your life now. this is your first and most important step. whether it is the first few steps or only step three there is no doubt that good scores will only help your application. that is the reality. the residency program directors are only concerned about these scores or attempts when they screen from amongst two thousand applications in eras. that is the only real criteria to reach interview and please do not DELUDE yourself otherwise.

if you are already board certified or in residency then step three is your only means of getting a permanent medical license in the usa.the time spent in failure is a opportunity cost that means lost pay from a practicing physician job that you would otherwise be in.

-what
you need to succeed in this or these exam(s) period. without success in this examination sequence you will not practice medicine in the usa.

-when to ACT
not next year next month next week tomorrow or even the next hour. call within the next MINUTE. and at least develop a registration feasibility plan that is directed towards your long or short term success.

-where is the means of acting
use the phone

-who should act
YOU

-why should you act
so that you will not lose any more time going around in circles

-how should you contact us

Sorry to hear that. Your post is definitely concerning to people like me who are relying on nbme's to predict how they might do on the exam.

What were your UW scores like? Did you read Kaplan at all?

Also, I'm not sure I understand. U had mentioned to us that your nbme offline scores for 1-5 were either failing or barely passing (180-200) & that u badly failed nbme 6 when u took it offline (163) one month before your exam here:

http://www.usmleforum.com/showthread.php?tid=600691-1

When did u take nbme's 7, 11, 12? How was it that you were able to improve on your online nbme's so much in such a short period of time...like 2-3 weeks? And u said u had taken nbme's 7, 11 & 12 ONLINE but were looking for offline blocks for nbme 11 a week before your exam?

U might have also been very anxious/nervous on your exam not letting you think properly...

I dont really understand your nbme scores. But I'd suggest you to take some time to digest the news & pick yourself up again.

GL!

Thank you everyone for ur concerns and support. I know this is concerning to all of you considering my situation. It is mind-boggling!

I can tell u this, that I understand my concepts and it was NOT nerves on test day at all. Cuz I told myself if I am nervous i will blow it. So I was not nervous on test day..I went in with confidence..

@ carpediem1, yes i took 1-5 offline and 6-12 online... wat i learned from nbme's 1-5 is that i had a problem with test taking skills NOT my concepts...I would always narrow it down to 2 answers and choose the wrong one.... so i learned from my mistakes.... that is why i took 6-12 online to assess myself and change my test taking skills....i dont know wat really happened in nbme 6 ( i was not thinking at all during this test) but the rest of them, as u can see, i fixed my test taking skills, and clearly showed improvement...

I was much better at understanding wat was being asked and dissecting the question as well. I was not scared in approaching the question..I hope this clears up ur understanding of my scores.

I just need everyone's suggestions on where to start now...cuz i did all nbme's and all of uworld. so how will i assess myself again? IT'S NOT THAT NBME'S HELPED ME ANYWAYS!!!
wat materials should i use? stick to the same thing FA, UW, goljan?? I dont want to spend too much time either....I need a plan

I strongly suggest to use same materials. We learn and integrate concepts via repetitions. Make sure you understand all the concepts being presented in the qbanks. I suggest, if you are weak in knowledge-based---you need to strengthen that further by watching the kaplan videos all over again. Dont watch them like watching a movie, try to grab all the concepts and be able to say it and reproduce ( this is the relevance of having a study partner). You mentioned you thought you did not need a sp. In this kind of exam, it is almost impossible that we will remember everything. Reproducing these concepts via interaction with a SP would give you a great deal of success. I performed well in med school because I always made sure I study with someone for better reinforcement of concepts. Good luck to you! Keep moving forward....not later..start today..I wish you the best!!
