I applied to 160 programs and got 9 IV's before I took a prematch and withdrew from the NRMP. I was told this by a resident I became friends with while I did my Sub-Internship. He said, apply to as many as you can afford, because you never know, even to programs you think you cant get into, because ask youself this, what happens if you dont match and next summer you dont have a job. It left a huge impression so I did and the strategy worked. Apply to as many as you can.

AMGs tradationally get about 20 ivs, go to 15 & Rank 10.
However, this year they have been asked to apply to more programmes & rank more as well because 5.8% (929) of AMGs did not match in 2013.
IMGs apply to 100+ Programmes (varies from speciality to speciality).
My personal feeling is that there will be more SOAP this year (good for American IMGs ie FMGs)

It's very speciality dependent. I don't know on the national level, but at my school, people applying to ENT are applying to 40-50 programs on average. IM is closer to 20 and 25.

I agree with Canada in that I think there will be more spots in the SOAP this year.

It really depends on what residency the person is applying for. I think for the most part, most deans will have their students focus their application according to how strong of an applicant they are. At least for IM for my school, the historical average over the last 5 years has been that people apply to no more than 20 programs, get 15 interview offers, go to 10 interviews, and match at their 1st-2nd ranked program. My school is not one of those top 10 schools, where I imagine the students are even more selective in what programs they choose to apply for to save their time and money. My classmates applying this year are on par with those numbers, with some applying to just the local programs because they know they will only rank the regional programs so they are not wasting their money otherwise. For pediatrics, people apply to even less programs. For surgical subspecialties (opthal, ent), people apply to a lot more programs (usually at least 40).

@blueamg/canada1 why would there be more SOAP positions this year? If anything there would be less with the increased competition.

What is the percentage of IMG's getting anything from the SOAP? What all prog are easily available? Do you think we have a chance in SOAP? How many prog should we apply in SOAP?
