Need a sincere advice, failed my cs twice. - charm25
#21
hi friends, sorry to hear abt ur experience with the exams. If i may contribute a little going by what charm25 wrote,i would like to pass this comments if it helps-
step 3-u must smile to the pt and give a warm hand shke to the pt,that is the 1st opportunity to make the 1st impression.
step 5- u may or may nt give d drape immediately,i chose nt to give d drape immediately cos i felt its too stereotyped for almost all examinee,i did my hx then draped d pt but u must not 4get to drape.
its ok to stand beside the pt if the pt is sitting on the exam table but if pt is sitting on the chair u should sit too so u dont look dominating.i stood for all my encounters except the phone conversations.
never fail to ask patient if they ve other concerns or questions and use more open ended questions so u re nt restricting the pt,i know time is limited but let d pt express themselves cos it will give u more information than u can ask,try not to cut them short as that is rude n nt professional,if by mistake u cut them short, apologize n let the sp continue

never fail to be on top of passing compliments e.g if sp said her husband is in a nursing home, respond immediately by saying oh i know its a difficult time for u but my goal is to make u feel better, say hi to ur husband,or if sp have something good happening, say congratulations, take a second to say how do u feel abt that n sp would respond great round off by saying u bet.its just like a normal conversation. if it is pain, respond as above contributor said.
i practised with different 2 americans n those were some of their complaints when they go to doctors office not passing necessary compliments,it takes abt 5 sec
most of what i shared above also was from this forum.it helps

I disagree with stereotypes of draping. In order not to miss any action, must practice the same things and apply to all the pts. The don't know each other, so if you say the same phrase to all of them that's ok. I think it's better to drape first, they just care if you did it and not if it's a mechanical thing, otherwise if you postpone things, like counseling etc, you may forget. That's why I draped all my pts at the beginning and counseled during the interview when they said about smoking or drinking, etc. So you hit a lot of targets during the interview and save marks just in case you run out of time when doing the closure. I didn't come into the room smiling, just peek at the door and depending their status it what I did. But I think you don't gave to be smiling all the time, that feels real false. Just relax, be quiet, ask with confidence, nod your head, repeat some things they say like... so you say you have been feeling weak for the last week is that ok?...
I don't know about where to stand, when the pt in lying on the stretcher you sit next to and when it sit you may take a sit or be stand up. They evaluate gross things, they don't remember when checking the list whether you were at 45 degress or these nonsenses. Just attach to the same phrases, and you'll do fine, otherwise if you try to memorize a lot of phrases, transitions, you may mix up during the interview.

Hi,

As far as mnemonics go, they're useful for some people, not so with others. One of the problems I've noticed is that (again, at least in some cases) it tends to impede the candidates ability to focus on the particular case encounter at hand - and focus is one of the major keys to maximizing your chances of passing.

Others have already mentioned that EACH case should be done the SAME way. I really want to stress the importance of this! This is a standardized exam, and you should ALSO be standardized in how you do each encounter. As mentioned in Kaplan, FA and others, you must have your diagnosis/differentials figured out before you open the door. Then, focus on this and question to confirm or rule out - and this is another key to maximizing your ability to pass.

This exam is primarily about your English and interpersonal communication skills - not your medical skills. You mentioned that you're already working with a tutor as regards your English. I would also suggest that you apply what you're being taught by them, relating to the CS exam protocol as much as possible.

I wish you the best of luck!

Very truly yours,
