if you want to have more fun with questions like this one, do a search on Google for Behavioral Science by Barbara Fadem (it's available in Google books) and check out pages 60-67.

hey rei positive and negative both can lead to increase in response or frequency

yeah if it were to be punishment child would not have gone to say hi
in punishment stimulus is given to weaken the response
as the child goes 4 times and inspite of been scolded has led to an increase in childs behavior,,

add of stimulus increases the childs behavior(usually in cases like these punishment is clubbed with positive reinforcement for example

physical punishment of child will suppress naughty behavior,,but may fade when punishment is removed and may model aggressive behavior in child(positive reinforcement same like before but his behavior became more aggressive)

same here in this case punishment was given in form of scolding but it faded and led to increase in boys original behavior so positive reinforcement,,,d

this was a good q. Made things clear for some of us. I bet that the people that got it wrong are used to animal (particularly rodent) research! Smile You'd never get a rat to do anything if you scold him.

Excellent question!
This question is not the least bit confusing unless you make it confusing for yourself. It basically is testing the simple understanding of this aspect of behavior science. A stimulus is a stimulus! dont trying to make life difficult for yourself by interpting what type of stimulus scolding is. Just look for the stimulus that was applied and then the end result!!! did it increase, decrease or stop the response? Since in this question it Increased the behavior then ans is: D - positive reinforcement nice and simple. Remember they expect us to answer these questions in under a minute so lets not miss out on other questions during the exam by thinking to deeply in one question.
