My residency program gives you 1-year contracts, with renewals upon satisfactory completion, until the end of the residency. Does anybody know how this affects the H1 visa? Do we need to reapply every year?

its not the contract but the duration your lawyer and the petitioner put on ur H1B petition. If your state medical training license is of 1 yr duration also then probably you will get a 1 yr H1B and has to be renewed each yr

What if you matched into a separate prelim and advance program? My prelim is the one fixing my H1B, so on the forms, duration of employment, do I put just 1 year?
Thanks!

I matched to separate preliminary and advanced programs. So far the H1B visa was approved for the 1 year preliminary.
