Biotin is required for the carboxylation of pyruvate to form oxaloacetic acid (OAA); it is a cofactor for pyruvate carboxylase. This anaplerotic (replenishing) reaction is important in the citric acid (Krebs) cycle, supplying the OAA that is required to condense with
acetyl-CoA formed from fatty acid catabolism.
