puzzling situation- need reply - doc52
#1
Hi all. I find myself in a difficult situation, am unable to make a decision, need some few words of advice...
I am currently doing my post graduate training in General Surgery in my home country, its not a paid position, am still being supported by my family. Am in my second year, i estimate i will finish probably in June 2011. Outlook for general surgeons in my home country used to be good, but now its not that great.
Am also a Green card holder, i come once every two years to get it stamped, they used to give me the two year extension easily until last year, now they have given me just one year, till Dec this year to re-enter US. I can't afford to be coming to US every year..
I graduated from medical school in 2004, i have 95 in Step 1, 87 in Ck, i didnt pass my first attempt in CS, i plan to redo it some time this year.
What should i do? Should i quit this training in my home country and come do some observerships in US? Should i apply for the Match with the scores i have? My LORs will only be from my home country. Have no USCE. And Gen Surg is quite tough to get into, may have to settle for something less like family practice. Should i sacrifice my dream of being a gen surgeon for a life with better pay in the US?

I am amazed that you have got a green card without any family/friends or contact in US ..

I think first of all you should finish your general surgery training in home country.........that will surely add to your cv...and then apply for surgery residency....dont leave your training in the middle.......and you can go for cs this year before this december, this way you will extend your green card and also be done with cs......
