You have just returned from a trip out of town and learn that your long-time patient with end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease has been hospitalized and is on a ventilator. On the way to the intensive care unit to visit him, you are informed that the patient has just died. On your way into the patient's room you meet the patient's 68-year-old wife. Which of the following is most appropriate to say to her?

A) "How do you feel?"
B) "I am sorry for your loss."
C) "I know you are upset."
D) "What happened while I was gone?"
E) "Your husband didn't suffer."

B is more sympathized compared to A. I picked B. but someone picked D, I thought about it, seems it's reasonable too. it's a very natural question, and an open ended questions, let patient to talk more. what you guys think?

cant pick d...coz what happened in doc's absence..cant ask patient's family..have to ask that q form ur team....

cant ask a...coz obviously she feels sad...and she might flip out if u ask her that...

the best option is to express empathy by saying sorry for her loss....and maybe saying later i know u must feel terrible....
