hey friends i badly need the help of u genius guys. my story goes like this. i m a 2004 graduate . then did 4 year formal training in middle east in emergency medicine,passed the arab board in emergency medicine.i had been trying for the last 3 years all the way to finish my usmle steps but unfortunately due to social and other commitments unable to do so.but i know i can do it anyways. i need ur advice in 2 regards:
1. what is the scope of an old graduate in getting US residency????
2. i will only and only try to go for ER residency in US becoz thats my passion and ofcourse i started and still continuing my career in emergency medicine???so is there any hope for getting ER residency in usa for an IMG definitely after getting scores in more than 90's????

plz help me, i m still holding kaplan lec notes in my hand but just waiting for the answers for the above confusions.

its really tough for an IMG to get in ER residency but nothing is impossible. If u want you can give it a chance and see what are the scores u get in your exams. you have one advantage of having done ER training in ur home country and that may nullify the impact of being old graduate.

I would advise to try New Zealand they do not care about year of graduation and will take you if you pass:

USMLE STEP1,USMLE STEP2, IELTS

then a clinical exam held in new zealand

after that you will work one year as a trainee.......>6 months in surgery and 6 in internal medicine

then you can apply to EM....after passing the above exams you will get your job in few weeks

YOG of 2004 is not the end of residency in the US. As pointed out by hotpotato, ER residency training in ur home country might be an advantage and many community programs will not mind the YOG based on that. Go ahead with the USMLE and try to get scores >95 in the steps. Work on getting some months of USCE as well and 2-3 US LORs and i strongly believe, u can get the ER residency spot in the US. best of luck.

You have fairly good chances with your 4 yr training in ER. 2004 grad date will hurt but not to the extent that it does to a regular guy. Make sure you find some contacts in programs here so that the chances will be better. Try getting 99's and you will definitely get into a ER program over here. Also depends on wr you did your ER residency and how similar in structure it is to US programs.

thankssssss alot guysssss. u have really boosted my confidence, regarding LOR. that will not be a problem with me. i got 2-3 lor rite now from us and uk trained emergency physicians and more even will not be a problem becoz the hospital i m working in had a contract with UPMC emergency medicine for which for 5 years i had a chance to work with them very closely during my residency here in middleeast and they all agree to give me LOR later if i will apply for my residency in north america.love u guys

my ER residency in purely and or i would say approximately veryyyy similar to US EM curriculum becoz my hopsital although in middle east and not run my US but all under the policies and regulations of US system,with regards to pt care,doctors salaries,JCI accredetation,etc etc.

2004 is not bad at all, with ur training , u r in great shape for ER ,it is not hard to get into.
u need the following:
1. good scores
2. usce
3. good us LOR
and all will be fine, trust me!

i am IMG and i finished my exams and my scores is 80 step I second attept , CK 81, passed cs , and i did not recieve any interview .can somebody hep me .thanks
