________________________________________ A 53 y/o M presents to you with chronic fatigue. He is not taking any medication and is not drinking alcohol. He complains of occasional blood in his stools. His past medical history is insignificant, except for 4 units of blood transfusion in 1982 after bleeding heavily in a road traffic accident. A diagnosis of anemia secondary to diverticular disease is made in this patient. Apart from the treatment of diverticulosis and anemia which of the following screening test would you like to perform? a)Screening for HIV infection. b)Screening for HAV c)Screening for HCV d)Screening for HBV e)Screening for HCV & HBV 72 sec........................................................

@uzairtariq thats old q however worth knowing it. bz people still around from time.
Hepatitis B & C can both be transmitted by blood transfusions. In the present time, due to thorough screening of the donor blood, blood transfusions are no longer an important risk factor for contracting hepatitis B or C. However, the screening of blood for "anti HBcAg" was introduced in 1986 and more sensitive enzymatic immune assays for hepatitis C were introduced in 1992, therefore all the patients who received blood transfusions before these dates should be screened for hepatitis B and/or C accordingly. |
