Every athlete on USMLE is on anabolic steroids. Steroids produce, amond their very many side effects, muscle weakness and electrolite imbalance: decreased Ca++, K+ and increase Na+

Hypokalemia and low Hco3 and low serum Cl = contraction alkalosis.

one of the main causes is diuretic abuse. other two being vomiting and mineralocorticoid excess.

a female athlete, on usmle q's is usually a/w diuretic abuse, stress # of tibia or metatarsal bones and anorexia nervosa.
