pre-match offers legality -

European

Dear all,

Reading through some recent postings I would like to clarify that accepting pre-match offers is perfectly legal as far as I know and is commonly offered to IMGs as well as some AMGs.

What is indeed considered "unethical" is explicitly sharing of ranking information between candidates and program directors when you still apply for the match. This is risky business because none of these agreements are ever made formal and may put you in a sticky situation. It is a common practice to express your interest in a certain program post interview to let the program directors know that you are seriously considering them. A subtle way to help them reach their own rankings. This is a thin line but if you are interested in a program - let them know! Just do not promise anything.

Once you have accepted a pre match offer you must withdraw from the match and it would be prudent to have a signed contract with the program. Withdrawl process is essential because if you do match after signing your prematch contract you must accept the match position and again may find yourself in a very uncomfortable situation. Withdrawl procedure is done vsv the web NRMP site.

It would be a nice gesture to notify the other programs that you have been interviewed at, so they do not rank you.

Also, it is common practice to express your interest in a certain program post interview to let the program directors know that you are seriously considering them. A subtle way to help them reach their own rankings.
