Nearly all of the normal genetic material is
present in the case of a robertsonian translocation, because
only a small amount of p arm from each chromosome is
lost. Statistically, one of six fetuses ries a robertsonian translocation will also be a carrier. In
balanced reciprocal translocation, the same possibility of
inheriting the defect exists. However, other structural ab-
normalities are likely to result in loss of significant genetic
material, reducing survivability, or to interfere with meio-
sis.
