Accepted a prematch. - rapids
#1
Hi, there, I was offered a prematch at the end of the interview day. I liked the program, interviews are cool, residents are really happy. So even it's a Univ-based, I called them back and accepted it today. The PD told me to keep this to myself, so sorry, I will tell you the name of program after I signed the contract.
I am currently a MS graduate student. I want H1, but I might cannot study good enough to take Step III by January, because they need the results by Feb (end of it?) to start H1 application. I might be able to take step III on March or April. I am wondering if I can use OPT to start my residency, and then apply for H1.
Thanks for reading, and will highly appreciate any input.
Welcome to ask me Qs if you have.

Yes you can begin on OPT,just consult with your university foreign student advisor if they give OPT for residency after ur MS program. If you can convince ur advisor how residency will help you in what you just studied(MS) then you have a very good chance(subject to univ poicy on this)..The univ where I a doing my MPH allows this.So just find out in your univ. Also tell the program director about it,most of them know this option that F1 students have, some maynot,so you need to tell them..I had interviewed in a program recently and told the PD about it and he was ok with it,if I matched into that program!Though I have already given step 3! But being on OPT saves you on a lot of tax!

Thank you so muc ccf1980. It's crystal-clear. I will let the program no. I had a typo in the message, it's Univ-based Community program.
Thanks again

Dont put your foot in your mouth, collect your opt early enough to start residency, dont consult any student advisor, just make sure you get your visa before one expirations.all you need is to verify if your residency program will accept OPT.

Dear Kita

Thank you for your enlightening post.I would however like to tell you two things on this issue. You are correct that your residency program should accept it,but generally the problem is getting an approval from your current university.Your OPT is given by ur current univ and not your program, your program just gives you an employment letter which should be taken to your foreign student advisor (Immigration specialist at ur univ) for further processing. So its wrong to say not to consult an advisor because that is prima forte. As for taking your OPT on time it generally takes about 2 months however one first needs to get an employment letter from the program. So if you prematch you can begin early processing of your OPT (provided you have graduated). However if you go in the match you will have to wait till till mid-end march for your employment letter.

Il give an example, I am graduating in May so il just be in time for doing a change of status within the US..assuming residency begins in July.

All your posts are really good Kita, keep up the good work.

Dear fmg 99

I am sorry I will not disclose where I am.However I can tell you I am in a very good school!Nice to know you are done with your step 1 and CS.If you aim for 2008 match you have gr8 chances.Advise you to give step 2 ck early and do an observership if your program is in a univ which has a nice big university hospital(you could do this in the summer semester by taking few credits in summer or not take anyy credits). Some research may help too!Try to have your step 3 score in hand before you apply on sep 1st 2007.All the best

Hi ccf1980,
The reason why asked you was my univ. doesn't have a hospital attached to it and the MPH program is not accredited and so I was planning to head home taking a break in spring-2007 sem.But I wanted to know if doing ur MPH and observership really helps our chances for the match please take time to comment because I am a little confused and the way to go about for observerships and the elusive US LOR's.

You apply for OPT either through your ISS advisor or directly online, once your application is received and processed, you receive your OPT in your mail box,the next time your ISS will communicate with you is 120 days to expiration of OPT to send you a reminder.I dont know about receiving a letter and going to the student advisor.

Of course you apply 120 days to your graduation date.If you apply through your student advisor,it may take as short as 14-21 days, depending on school, immigration department of the school and state.

Maybe you didnt read my message, what I was referring to was a post that said you should ask your student advisor if you can start residency with OPT....once you have your opt you can do residency with it,you dont need to ask her/him what to do with OPT.

GL.
I am not speculating,I said what I know(100%)
It may differ for your case or school, but that is another ball game
