A 5 y/o mentally retarded boy is brought to the city from a rural community, for evaluation. A detailed history reveals mental retardation in a number of other family members, especially the males. Physical examination is remarkable for a long face with large ears and bilateral enlargement of the testes. This presentation is suggestive of
a. down syndrome.
b. edwards syndrome
c. fragile x syndrome
d. klinefelter syndrome
e. turner syndrome

the answer is c.. fragile x syndrome...(which is due to trinucleotide repeat expansion)
as .. it affects mainly males n is the 2nd most comon cause of mental retardation..... n has typical phenotypic presentation as is mentioned- long face , large ears ...b/l large testis n other features like hyperextensibl joints n mitral valve prolapse....
