A 65 yr old man wid h/o of COPD brought to ER admitted in ICU for respiratory failure.after intubation and optimisation of ventilator settings,pt is still hypercapnic.which of thefollowing will improve his hypercapnia?

Co2 depends on only two things... ventilation and metabolism...

to decrease co2... either increase ventilation or decrease metabolic production of co2 (inturn increase consumption of co2 inside body)

Ratio of Co2 production and O2 consumption is called respiratory quotient Its different for different substrates:
CHO=1.0
Protein=0.8
fat=0.76
Thus fats will produce less CO2 for same amount of O2.this can be actually beneficial in patients with respiratory failure and hypercapnia.
