Please tell me what is the difference between PGY 1 categorical and preliminary, which do we have to choose as IMG, which one is having good chances to get selected.

PGY1 categorical is a 3 year program. You will get it renewed at the end of each year's training. But preliminary program is just one year contract. At the end of the first year, you have to look for another position. If you want to do residency in one specialty, such as IM or surgery, just applied for categorical ones. Preliminary ones are for those speciaties that require one extra year of training other than the categorical training. For example, radiology, anesthesia, neurology etc, require one preliminary training before you can go on to the three year categorical training for that specialty.
